This weekend found members of the Purdue Outing Club at Sullivan Cave in southern Indiana. Those who were able to go had the opportunity to experience one of the largest and longest caves in Indiana. In fact, Sullivan is the 3rd longest cave in Indiana at the moment. It contains all sizes of passage, wet and dry. It contains over 10 large rooms, many of which require a wetsuit and swimming to see. This weekend Bob, the cave patron, was gracious enough to let us visit. He had already planned to be there since he was leading a group of Rose-Hulman fraternity members into the cave to do a little trash pickup and general cleaning. We entered with them, and then headed off on our own. We walked, crawled, and waded our way through passages and saw two big rooms, the Mountain Room and the Spiral Room. Of course at least one person had to trip and go face first into the waist deep 54 degree water, but all was well in the end. We avoided some of the deeper swimming sections since we did not have wetsuits for this trip. The worst part of the trip for most people seemed to be "The Backbreaker" passage, which is a long passage that explorers must use to access the major sections of the cave. It varies between 2-5 feet, but never high enough to allow one to comfortably stand up. The passage lives up to its name. In the end I believe we spent around 6 1/2 hours seeing the cave.
